Ingredients
Scale
- 4 round loaves of bread (about 6 inches in diameter)
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 1 pound spaghetti
- 1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Using a serrated knife, carefully cut out a circle from the top of each bread loaf, maintaining about a 1-inch border.
- Gently remove the bread from the center to create a shell, leaving about a 1/2-inch thickness. Save the removed bread for breadcrumbs or croutons.
- Spread the garlic butter mixture generously inside each bread bowl and on the cut-out tops.
- Place the hollowed bread bowls and tops on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, until the bowls are golden brown and the garlic butter is melted and bubbly. Remove from the oven and set aside.
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef (or sausage) over medium-high heat. Drain any excess grease.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat, cover, and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions. Drain thoroughly.
- Once the sauce is ready, fill each garlic bread bowl with spaghetti and sauce generously.
- Finish by sprinkling with grated Parmesan cheese.
- Serve immediately, with the garlic bread tops on the side for dipping.
Notes
For a more robust flavor, allow your sauce to simmer longer. Store leftovers in airtight containers for up to 3 days.
